Get Ready For The Reefer Album Dropping 10.14.08!

A collab between Nick Thornburn (Islands) and Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) makes up Reefer. They decided that it would be a good idea to work together at a SXSW party (possibly a drunken agreement between the two). The creativity behind the album was influenced by the tropical surroundings of Hawaii where they decided to go into hiding to put their ideas together.

Their self-titled mini album (previously entitled The Life Narcotic) contains six sun-dripped songs and three interludes, plus remixes from Dntel and Flying Lotus. The album was composed on the Maui coastline in Makena, and was finished soon after in Los Angeles at Daddy Kev’s studio, the Echo Chamber. Reefer is very much influenced by the beautiful tropical surroundings, the sounds of the ocean, and being far away from their regular daily routines. Not predictably sunny in tone, the minor-key arrangements and Thorburn’s playful wordplay conjures up images of something more sinister than cheeseburgers in paradise. Kev’s subtle, controlled production fits each songs mood nicely and draws from Hawaiian pop influences. Initially considered to be a one-off project, Reefer hopes to make another album when they meet again in a new exotic tropical location.

Definitely be on the lookout as the album is set to drop real soon and will be available for download through I-Tunes.

Starfucker “German Love”

Here’s one for you called German Love Starfucker German Love by Starfucker, one of my favorite indie bands. Sick name right? They put together an eclectic mix of turntables, drums, keyboards, and guitars and overall you get a generally warm and welcoming sound that’s not blatantly blaring and killing your eardrums in a slow painful death. By the way, did I mention they use turntables? Who wouldn’t love that? To sum it all up, hip hop fans and indie rock fans can come together to appreciate the joyous music they bring. Definitely be on a look out for their self entitled album Starfucker Starfucker German Love which is out NOW.

Count Bass D “Art for Sale”

CountBassDArtForSale Count Bass D Art for Sale

“My record company is jerkin’ me… in a million ways that I can see…”

This song is a great representation of what artists are encountering with record labels today. Dwight Farrell aka Count Bass D aka Dwight Spitz, from Tennessee, isn’t your typical southern rapper. His influences of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, MF Doom, and J Dilla are prevalent in his lo fi grooves. Art for Sale Count Bass D Art for Sale is the title track from his album released in 2006. I always love it when I hear cats without a real singing voice sing to a track. … and conscious too?! What more can you ask for?

Check out Count’s latest album L7 which dropped a couple of days ago.

No Twist “Neon Golden”

notwist.jpg

Here’s a song by The Notwist called neon golden from their album of the same title Neon Golden No Twist Neon Golden. Formed in 1989, the German indie rock band has constantly recreated itself, blurring the lines and meshing elements of electronica into their music. Members of the group have worked with several members of anticon including Alias and most recently Themselves forming the group 13 & God. They also work separately with bands such as Lali Puna, Schweisser, and Ms. John Soda.

On this album they pull off a perfect balance of raw, folky indie rock elements highlighted with distorted electronica. Their newest album The Devil, You + Me No Twist Neon Golden offers you a more indie rock sounding album than anything but definitely retains that addictive raw factor The Notwist is known to deliver. Highly Recommended.
