Flying Lotus – Until The Quiet Comes
Cosmogramma was a huge undertaking for the artist who placed Los Angeles’ electronic scene back on the world stage. It was one that seemed to desperately break free from the production styles that defined him on his first full length outing respectfully entitled Los Angeles. Despite being an epic production which utilized more live instrument recordings and artist collaborations than ever before, it still felt like it was missing the back drop of a hazy 4/4 beat signature that made your mind melt in hypnotizing fashion.
Until The Quiet Comes is a quieter album. Not in terms of overall loudness but you sense fewer layers fighting for attention and there is more room to allow your imagination to run free. The result is a refreshing intimacy that takes us back to Flying Lotus‘ sonic roots. Song parts don’t seem as obvious as they flow naturally from beautiful intros into ground breaking territory built on the foundation of hip hop and jazz. Despite the changes in production approach, the album remains focused on the intent to listen through headphones or high quality sound setups at home, outside of the usual club venues where you’re used to hearing obvious drops or seeing familiar electronic artists.
His collaborations with Laura Darlington, Thom Yorke, Thundercat, Erykah Badu and Niki Randa stand out once again to remind us all that Flying Lotus has a gift for fully expressing himself through the voice of others, whether it be an instrumental or vocal contribution. My stand out track that has been on constant repeat is Getting There (feat. Niki Randa). This is an album that is meant to be listened through from beginning to end where you will discover your own hidden gems tucked away in the least obvious places. The album is available now on physical and digital formats.
