The foot tapping beat of Wild may get you going but it’s really the lofty, hoots and hollers on the song’s chorus that sets you soaring. The band’s promise of “I believe that I can make you scream” echoes gently through my head to the uproarious output of this New Orleans sextet. Do not however let their roots mislead you, while Wild hints at just the slightest glimpse of an afro-pop rhythm, the majority of Royal Teeth’s material leans more straight synth-pop. On the track, the youthful and uneasy voice of singer Gary Larsen oozes the kind of discernible yearning and naive optimism that could launch 1000 fixies. A song transfixed on the glories of youth, and the struggle to hold on to our adolescence, Wild beautifully parodies its lyrical themes musically as well. It inhabits its lyrics with a sheer, unflappable delight and determination much like that of a 20-something, in their parent’s basement. Their debut EP Act Naturally is out now.
