RUN DMT Artist Spotlight – Free Downloads – Get Ripped Or Die Trying / Bong Voyage

rippedordie RUN DMT Artist Spotlight Free Downloads Get Ripped Or Die Trying / Bong Voyage

I felt that I needed to share this music with ya’ll if you haven’t checked out their stuff yet. RUN DMT along with other related sounds was just recently introduced to me by my friend matthewdavid over at Leaving Records. I can’t get enough of Bong Voyage and latest offering Get Ripped Or Die Trying. The album name is nowhere short a valid description of their music. His sounds mesh heavy “Dilla-esque” beats that lapse between sequences of short and sporadic to elongated and washed out guitar feedback complemented by highly effected organic sounds. It’s a dreamy landscape in the lush and vibrant world of RUN DMT and you will enjoy this brief journey through time and space. No, I did not write this while high, but I am listening to their music right now and that’s the effect that it brings. Enjoy it while it lasts. Highly Recommended.

Dimlite Spotlight

dimlite Dimlite Spotlight

I’ve taken a bit of a holiday break recently but that hasn’t stopped me from listening to a ton of music. It’s great to spend time focused on really listening to all the intricacies but it’s definitely been a challenge to find the time with so much great music being put out there. I’ve been tuned in mostly on the heavy experimental beat scene this past week. Some have placed it in an entirely new genre conveniently titled “wonky.” Some of the more well known artists include Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Dimlite, Dorian Concept, Fulgeance, Mono / Poly and Eskmo to name a few. I’d like to shine the light here if you will on one particular: Dimlite. He’s originally from Switzerland and his creative productions have taken him worldwide. Check out a few of my favorite YouTube clips below.

He released his first EP A/DD in 2003 and two albums Runbox Weathers, 2005 and This Is Embracing, 2006) on the Berlin-based label Sonar Kollektiv. He’s also put out records under The Slapped Eyeballers.

Artist Spotlight: B. Fleischmann

BFleischmann Artist Spotlight: B. Fleischmann

I was in the middle of organizing my music library when I came across some older work by B. Fleischmann that I absolutely had to post up here. Getting off to an early start Bernard started playing piano at the age of 8 and started playing the drums at 13. He was eventually influenced by the electronic music scene in Vienna and began to make beats full of complex time signatures and beautifully created melodies. Although his earlier work was heavily electronic he began moving back to his organic roots. Here are two tracks, It’s All So from the album A Choir Of Empty Beds and Broken Monitors from The Humbucking Coil. Enjoy.

Please Welcome Deftune’s Newest Writer – David Wexler aka Dr. Strangeloop (Brainfeeder)

Introducing David Wexler

drstrangeloop2 Please Welcome Deftunes Newest Writer David Wexler aka Dr. Strangeloop (Brainfeeder)

Please give a warm welcome to the newest member of the Deftune fam, David Wexler. David is well known for his visual and musical talents and his work as Dr. Strangeloop signed under Flying Lotus’ Label Brainfeeder. He creates imaginative landscapes by combining abstract visuals, reflecting his chaotic and beautiful musical arrangements that at times seem to invoke some wholly new media-universe. His recent release, Are We Lost Mammals of an Approaching Transcendental Epoch? was highly recommended on Deftune and we are all HUGE fans, fortunate to be blessed by his writing talents. Please stay tuned for his commentary on subjects such as synaesthesia, cymatics, artificial intelligence, and the future of music. Also look out for him at the next Deftune show on Saturday, Oct. 10th at the Blue Monkey Lounge in Los Angeles

Jamie Lidell “Little Bit Of Feel Good”

Jamie Lidell Album Cover Jim, Electronica, Pop, Soul, Funk, Motwon, Singer, Songwriter, Producer

One of the top “Feel Good” records of the year.

If you’re melancholy about the state of our nation’s economy, I apologize for not being the savior to your monetary woes. Fortunately, I can provide you with some uplifting music that will lift you out of your slump. Jamie Lidell’s latest album Jim Jamie Lidell Little Bit Of Feel Good has more of a Motown and less of his familiar electronica sound, but accomplishes his goal of making joyful record.

Check out this crazy Brit on an interview with Pitchfork’s Nitsuh Abebe.

Inside the “Crazy” world of Danger Mouse

Super Producer Danger Mouse Interview

Here’s a throwback interview that super producer Danger Mouse did for the 2006 LA Film Festival at the Hammer museum near UCLA. KCRW’s Jason Bentley conducts the interview and converses with Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, about the beginning of his career, his approach to making music, and who he’s worked with. To end his discussion, he speaks about the three movies he chose to be shown at the Film Festival.

A lot of the people I talk to know Gnarles Barkley because of their international success, but few know that there are two people that make up the character. Danger Mouse (and Cee Lo Green) has a lengthy track record. Watch this interview to find out what inspires him to make music, even though he lacks the ability to read music or play instruments.

It’s always great to hear how great minds work. I got sucked in and I hope you will too.

Check out the video and to see how Woody Allen (film producer) fits into the puzzle.

Enjoy.

Deftune Artist Spotlight- Funkadelic

Funkadelic Maggot Brain Funk Soul Psychedelic George Clinton

Funkadelic was a driving force for the the soul/funk movement during the 1970s. The group was led by George Clinton. They played along along side Parliament, a doowop group also led by Clinton. After being signed on the label Westbound in 1968, they began experimenting with harder guitar driven psychedelic music inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. It eventually evolved into a more structured guitar based funk.

The album Maggot Brain Deftune Artist Spotlight Funkadelic was released in 1971 and would heavily influence future funk, rock, and hip hop artists. Here is a track called Maggot Brain. It’s the updated mix which was released in 2005 adding additional percussion and keys into the mix. It’s currently available through Alphapup. I also added the original as a bonus. Dim the lights, relax, and let the music free your mind.

Deftune Artist Spotlight- Adele

Adele 19 XL Recordings M.I.A.UK title=

Adele’s voice leaves me in awe every time I hear her sing. From the moment you first hear her, time just stops. Check out two of my favorite tracks from her newest album 19, released under independent record label XL Recordings (M.I.A.).

‘”Should I give up/or should I just keep chasing pavements/Even if it leads nowhere” “Chasing Pavements”

The minute you hear that voice, the hair stands up on the back of your neck and you realize this is someone special.

She’s just 19, but Adele Laurie Blue Adkins—you can call her simply Adele—sings; like a woman three times her age, a soul sensation in her native U.K. who is poised to conquer America with 19, her debut album, which comes out in the States on XL /Columbia Records after debuting at #1 in the British charts.

The first single, “Chasing Pavements,” a #2 hit in the U.K., characterizes her autobiographical approach, written after a brawl in a London club with her boyfriend, which sent her fleeing out the door onto Oxford Street…’

Deftune Artist Spotlight- Eek-a-Mouse

51kyte7KO1L. SL500 AA280 Deftune Artist Spotlight Eek a Mouse

Eek-a-Mouse is one of Jamaica’s premier Reggae artists. He is also the creator of “Singjaying” a combination of syncopated vocal embellishments. He got his name from a racing horse he used to always bet on in case any of you were wondering. His career took off in the early 80s. He has an impressive catalog of releases but my favorite album is Wa-Do-Dem Deftune Artist Spotlight Eek a Mouse which was released back in 1981. I’ve seen a few of his live shows and believe me it’s something you’d have to experience. You’ll be enjoying life and forgetting all about your inner inhibitions the moment he sings his first words. Lucky for us he’s performing soon at the We The People Festival here in Los Angeles. Check out a few of his tracks from Wa-Do-Dem Deftune Artist Spotlight Eek a Mouse.

Deftune- Invisible Skratch Piklz- Tribute

bw all5 Deftune Invisible Skratch Piklz Tribute

For those who don’t know Invisibl Skratch Piklz were pioneers of Turntablism and Skratch Music during the 90s. The group consisted of Qbert, Mix Master Mike, Apollo, Disk, Shortkut, D-Styles, Yoga Frog, Flare, and A-Trak. It’s been years since these guys performed together but to this day there still hasn’t been a turntable/skratch dj collective that could match their level of skill, showmanship, creativity, intensity and influence. Here are some of my favorite ISP videos:
