Simple Citizens “The Bearded Fist!”

simplecitizens.jpg

I just saw Simple Citizens perform last night at the Scotland Yard Pub out in Canoga Park and they ripped it! Check out their myspace page and stay updated because you do NOT want to miss their next show. If you love jazz, reggae, and that classic hip hop sound we all love you definitely have to take a listen. During their performance they seemingly switched up from hip hop grooves with Anton spitting sick rhymes on the mic into a full blown jazz improv set featuring an upright bass, jazz guitar, trumpet, drums, and percussion. It blew my mind. Here’s a track called The Bearded Fist! Simple Citizens The Bearded Fist! from their album Early Morning Simple Citizens The Bearded Fist!

Album Info

Originally, the album started off with gunshots, people scattering, and a voice speaking about how hip hop just got shot and left for dead. This was a year before Nas’ album, Hip Hop is Dead hit stores. The idea was scrapped, and instead of pointing out the obvious, RRRRAP begins with the Cold Crush Brothers introducing the whole thing, an ode to hip hop.

.

The opening track The Art of Love Letters is a flipped version of The Art of Noise “Moments in Love”. Cleverly enough, he used the acapella from Ghostface Killah’s, Save Me Dear; a love letter about his woman holding him down when times were rough. From there, it just gets better. Every beat is raw, and a handsome lineup of dope emcees you’d want to hear on the same record is on the originally produced tracks. Kool G Rap, Rakim, O.C, Lords of the Underground, Andre 3000, even the bay area’s own Jihad The Roughneck! The cuts, as you’d expect, take hip hop scratches to an uncommon level. On tracks like My Method, he murderates Nas’ voice, and deconstructs one of his classic lines on Illmatic, into his own testament. Or the second to last track, I Got The Feelin produced entirely from scratching!

.

RRRRAP is aimed towards fans of mid 90’s hip hop. There is one track in particular that’s accessible to hip hop fans by todays standards, and that’s the remix of Mos Def’s song, Sunshine. The original beat was produced by Kayne West on The New Danger album. I personally think Kanye’s version didn’t fit Mos Def’s rhyme style, but this version burns it, and Kayne’s name is crossed out in the song like graffiti wars. The track was certainly more suitable for Mos Def, aptly named “A Brighter Sunshine”.

.

This album can fall into the same category as Jay Dee’s Donuts album, in the sense that it’s a very creative record, but doesn’t have a real home in hip hop today. The days of the REAL mixtape are long gone, and the days of dj’s cuttin’ and scratchin’ are null by mainstream standards. RRRRAP is not quite a mixtape, cause all the beats and cuts are original, and it’s not quite an album, cause most of the vocals are from older acapellas. It’s a creative piece of hip hop that probably used hundreds of dusty records to create itself. Folks who’ve been in hip hop for a while, and don’t call Jay Z “old school”, will certainly dig this.

Charizma “Methods”

 Charizma Methods

Here’s a track entitled Methods Charizma Methods from Charizma’s and Peanut Butter Wolf’s album Big Shots Charizma Methods. They were both signed under Disney-owned Hollywood Basics back in 1990.

“They landed themselves a record deal with the Disney-owned Hollywood Basics label, home of Organized Konfusion, and for the next year they’d both follow a strict regiment of making music all day long, taking breaks for pinball and apple juice, and learning the fundamentals of battling a major label over artistic integrity. As it turns out, Walt Disney wasn’t much of a hip hop expert. After recording about an album’s worth of material, the only thing released was a promo cassette of their song “Right Light Green Light.’”

Excerpt From www.stonesthrow.com

They were on the verge of blowing up but unfortunately Charizma was murdered in 1993. It’s safe to say that Charizma will live on as one of the greatest Hip Hop emcees of all time.

Here’s a track by Scientifik (RIP) entitled Jungles of Da East [Explicit] Scientifik Jungles Of Da East from his debut album Criminal [Explicit] Scientifik Jungles Of Da East. This is probably one of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever made. It features work by Diamond and Rza. This album was previously only available through bootleg vinyl copies after being shelved due to complications with his death. Much respect goes out to this artist.
