Daedelus To Release New Album In March Through Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Imprint

daedelus Daedelus To Release New Album In March Through Flying Lotus Brainfeeder Imprint

Check out the teaser video that was posted today on Brainfeeder’s site. The video features the track “Fin de Siècle” from Daedelus’ debut album under the Brainfeeder label entitled Righteous Fists of Harmony. The concept behind the album comes from the story of the Boxer Rebellion.

Daedelus “Righteous Fists of Harmony” from DestroyRockMusic Inc. on Vimeo.

“After seventy years of China’s opium-related subjugation by Queen
Victoria and her allies, a force of resistance fighters — termed
“Boxers” by the British — rose to the challenge in 1898. Calling
themselves “The Righteous Fists of Harmony,” this secret society of
martial artists felt they held magical powers: they believed
themselves bulletproof, able to fly, and capable of raising the dead
(who would then fight alongside them). And so began the brief Boxer
Rebellion; three years later 100,000 Boxers had fallen, their magic
helpless against the cutting-edge machinery of war. The British
prevailed only to face ultimate defeat, as their empire rapidly
declined.
Daedelus endeavors to compose a requiem for the end — of beliefs, of
lives, and of an era. This elegy for a bygone battle sheds light on
our own contemporary conundrum: will our faith in modernity be our
downfall? Are we blinded by this age of wonders, doomed to be
destroyed by our ingenious inventions? Although Daedelus’ music has
always juxtaposed organic and electronic elements, they war as never
before on “Righteous Fists of Harmony,” a portrait of a tumultuous era
that came crashing to a close.”

The album will be available world wide on March 23, 2010 in digital and physical formats. Highly Recommended

New Nocando (Alpha Pup Records, Low End Theory) Album Jimmy The Lock Out Today

jimmythelock 400x400 New Nocando (Alpha Pup Records, Low End Theory) Album Jimmy The Lock Out Today

First Impressions Are Everything.

The first time I met Nocando (James) was at Low End Theory in Los Angeles. He didn’t know who I was and I had just begun following the Low End scene. I was there with a couple friends and I was having too much fun to remember that I had left my brand new iPhone at the bar. I realized this right after I made my exit and a sign with big bold letters “No Re-entry” was pointed out to me after explaining to security what happened. I’m getting desperate at this point and suddenly Nocando steps out with a stack of CDs for sale. I’m only the second person he talks to at this point but I’m not going to beat around the bush. With a quick exchange of names I explain to him what happened and without hesitation he steps inside, talks to the bartender, gets a hold of my phone and promptly returns it to me. It didn’t really hit me until later that one of the sickest emcees I’ll ever hear in this life time went out of his way to help someone he didn’t even know. That just showed tremendous character on his part which seems to be lacking with a lot of so-called rappers in main stream media (i’m not going to in depth right now). Unfortunately I didn’t have any cash at the moment to buy his CD to show my gratitude, but know this, I will be buying his new album to support (even though I did get my hands on a promo copy). I wound up running into Nocando again and I was fortunate to help record a few tracks with him at the Alpha Pup Echo Chamber (thanks to Daddy Kev) and from first hand experience I can honestly say this dude is a killer on the mic no matter the setting.

The Album

When I read the names of the producers behind this project I automatically new that this was going to be nothing short of amazing. With names such as Nosaj Thing, Free The Robots, Daedelus, Thavius Beck, Maestro, and Nobody you can only expect the best. Add Nocando’s limitless talent and you’ve got yourself an instant classic.

If you’ve caught him at Low End or caught a few of his battle videos circulating the web you might have an idea of what he can bring in terms of skills and content. His lyrics are intricately woven and create a balance between witty word play and building story lines. His satirical approach to every day life situations is highly addictive and you’ll be hanging onto every last word. Don’t lose concentration or you might lose out on some valuable life lessons. Nocan is definitely doing his duty to keep his audience thinking and imagining while dropping priceless knowledge. Highly Recommended

Daedelus Returns To Low End Theory For A Special Extended Performance

This Wednesday, November 25th we are proud to present a special holiday edition of Low End Theory. For the first time since July, L.A.’s prodigal son Daedelus returns to the Low End stage for an extended one hour set. Residents Daddy Kev, Nobody and Nocando will also be in the house. Early arrival is always recommended for easy entry at Low End Theory:

DAEDELUS
*** EXTENDED SET ***
[Ninja Tune]
One of L.A.’s most daring artists, this young musical romantic weaves together a true “love-sound” that falls between honeyed melody and avant-electronics. Daedelus chops and splices disparate acoustic sources into incredible works of staggering resonance. Contrasting IDM styled cut-ups with childlike 30s arrangements, he has refined a style that has no imitators. Daedelus has been a stalwart of Low End Theory since our inception, and we consider him to be one of our residents-at-large. This night he returns home for his first Low End appearance since July.

Ernest Gonzales – Been Meaning To Tell You LP

ernestalbumcover Ernest Gonzales Been Meaning To Tell You LP

A vibrant swirl of echoey guitar riffs and various organic instruments sit comfortably in the arms of hard hitting beats while riding on the coat tails of imaginative synth lines that come barreling over everything in sight with a flurry of deep gritty square waves leaves this avid music lover already yearning for the next album. This is truly music to my ears. A great start for FoF Music with their debut LP release from Ernest Gonzales. You’ll find that Its varied harmonic textures run fervent with soul and wonderment.

This album is unlike any other. The final collaboration will include 16 tracks from Daedelus, CYNE, Faunts, Yppah, matthewdavid, and copy. It will be accompanied by a full-color art book featuring original works from 14 visual artists. The book will be available in physical form from FoF music as well as in digital formats. Check out previews of the breath taking visuals at www.beenmeaningtotellyou.com. Album due out on February 19, 2010. Highly Recommended

Swiss Electronic-Pop Duo Larytta To Curate The Second In The Friends of Friends Series

fof1 Swiss Electronic Pop Duo Larytta To Curate The Second In The Friends of Friends Series

From FoF

It’s only been months since FoF launched their record label experiment and with some good fortune we’re finding ourselves inching closer to our goal: to get both artists and fans alike to re-think the notions of how music is be created, distributed, and consumed.

The name itself FoF Music (Friends of Friends) is the driving force behind the label, referring to the most effective, trusted way that people find out about new music…through their FRIENDS, with good old-fashioned word-of-mouth discoveries. The concept in short, is we invite an artist whose work we truly admire to create a split EP and they in turn invite another friend to complete the B-side. The curator also invites another artist to create the visual component of the collaboration. For our inaugural FoF Volume 1 release we invited friend and electronic madman, Daedelus, who asked his buddies Jogger to be the EP’s flipside. Instead of releasing it on a CD, Daedelus asked a visual artist to create a t-shirt with which we included a download card. Our first foray into becoming a “record label” was unique one, we received kind words from music fans and artists of all kinds whose curiosity was piqued. While it’s too early to tell if our model will actually work, we’re relieved to know our first release won’t eventually wind up as a beverage coaster.

With Volume 1 a success, the stakes are high for FoF Volume 2 to deliver so we invited one of their very favorite acts, Larytta to curate the second release. Last year the Swiss duo released their debut “Difficult Fun” which we believe was one of the criminally underrated albums of the past year, an infectious, whimsical fusion of weird beats, afropop, 80s electro-funk, futuristic soul, and sunny folk that would comfortably fit anywhere between Kompakt/Spectral 12″s, Hot Chip, Konono no.1, and Paul Simon in one’s record collection. Without ever meeting them, we reached out and explained the idea and to our surprise (and elation!) they enthusiastically took us up on the offer.

Like the first installment, the artist who Larytta chose to complete the b-side, fellow Swiss producer Bauchamp, was one that wasn’t on our radar at all before but now we’re ever so happy to have an outlet to showcase this friend of a friend. A perfect complement to Larytta’s a-side of island-influenced electronic pop, Bauchamp’s contribution is a breezy dose of tropical techno and electro. As huge fans of Larytta, we would have been grateful if they handed gave us some “outtakes ” or more “experimental” jams but instead they turned in their best, maybe catchiest output to date. It’s an exciting glimpse of what’s to come from this increasing unclassifiable eclectic duo.

The opener “You Got Nothing” is equal parts humorous art-pop and tribal electronics, lightly accented by Caribbean flourishes and new wave synths. The bright “Promises” sounds like a hit to us, anchored by a sunny african guitar line it’s crooning electronic R&B/pop has been in our heads since the moment we heard it. Lastly, they give us their dance-floor banger “Play Me Loud (Futuro)”. Think fire + melody and you get Larytta’s third and final contribution to the release.

If Larytta is your soundtrack to sipping daquiris in the sand, Bauchamp is what’s playing on the beach’s dance party. Exploring many of the same influences (techno, funk, latin) as the a-side, Bauchamp transforms them into his own unique, intoxicating dance-focused brew. In the bouncy “Calypso”, synth bass and steel drum melodies riff off each other over housey drum programming and analog island-jazz. “Tchumu” rides a sped up, funk bassline while the meticulous arrangements turn the rhythm track inside out, getting a lot of mileage out of little bit. While the careful production takes a cue from Cologne and the “microhouse” it spawned, Bauchamp is sonically more melodic and playful fitting well with Larytta’s poppier a-side.

FoF Volume 2 will be on released once again on a 100% organic cotton tee(Alternative Apparel), designed by Tatiana Rihs and including the incredible seed-paper(you can plant them!) download card with a code to retrieve the album and exclusive remixes from Lazer Sword, The Chap, Hecuba, Round Table Knights, Otic Angst and more……Highly Recommended

Los Angeles Duo Jogger Releases Album Through Daedelus’ New Magical Properties Imprint!

jogger Los Angeles Duo Jogger Releases Album Through Daedelus’ New Magical Properties Imprint!

Jogger has been described as “ADD music” — their experimental electronic sound is sometimes dangerous, sometimes poignant, and sometimes funny, but always captivating. This America singer songwriter duo consists of Amir Yaghmai on violin and guitar, and Jonathan Larroquette on laptop and controllers, with the vocal duties divided between them. Initially, Jogger had almost no idea what type of music they wanted to create, but they had a room full of instruments, hardware, software, and a good seven years to decide. One would think that would be plenty of time to make an album. One would be wrong.

To make matters worse, Jogger has been known to spend months on one track — even days on one note — as they build intricate worlds from sonic scraps. That excess of time and labor has resulted in complex songs that unveil themselves slowly over multiple listens, music with a density that can be
felt.

Amir often collaborates, arranges and tours with musicians and composers such as Mike Andrews (Donnie Darko, Freaks and Geeks), Inara George’s band “The Bird and The Bee,” and Pete Yorn. Jonathan is also the co-creator of comedy podcast “Uhh Yeah Dude,” which has gained cult status over the past 3 years with 180+ episodes.

Their first official release was a collaboration with Daedelus, called “I. Sent Off / II. Sus Per Coll,” for his “Exquisite Corpse” album on Ninja Tune. Next they remixed “Internal Science” for Subtitle and Thavius Beck’s “LabWaste” project. In May of 2009, Jogger released “Friends of Friends, Vol.1″ (a split EP with Daedelus) and supported the release with an international tour. Soon after, they were chosen as one of URB Magazine’s “Next 100″ artists to watch. Jogger’s first full-length album, entitled “This Great Pressure,” is available now on Magical Properties, Alfred “Daedelus” Darlington’s new imprint.
