I just saw Simple Citizens perform last night at the Scotland Yard Pub out in Canoga Park and they ripped it! Check out their myspace page and stay updated because you do NOT want to miss their next show. If you love jazz, reggae, and that classic hip hop sound we all love you definitely have to take a listen. During their performance they seemingly switched up from hip hop grooves with Anton spitting sick rhymes on the mic into a full blown jazz improv set featuring an upright bass, jazz guitar, trumpet, drums, and percussion. It blew my mind. Here’s a track called The Bearded Fist! from their album Early Morning

Check out this track called Unwind Your Mind from the Greyboy album 15 Years Of West Coast Cool featuring The Greyboy All-Stars. The group is a collaboration between DJ Greyboy and jazz musician Karl Denson (saxophone, flute). It’s absolutely imperative that you stop whatever it is you’re doing and pick up this album immediately. You’ll be immediately rewarded with some of the funkiest groundbreaking jazz music this world has to offer. It is highly recommended.

Check out this track by Clutchy Hopkins entitled Rocktober. You can find it on his album Walking Backwards released earlier this year. Yes, I know you can’t help but sit back and nod your head to this. Featuring a slew of raw drums and a mixture of various live instruments Clutchy creates a musical journey reminiscent of revered classic jazz and funk records lying hidden in between dusty piles of Herb Albert and Barbara Streisand records found only at your local Goodwills. There’s a lot of mystery behind the man. Check out his bio from his Myspace:

Clutchy Hopkins is a multi-instrumentalist who recorded under various pseudonyms throughout his entire musical career; his recorded output consists of everything from field recordings of his travels to avant compositions, to jazz to funk. These recordings were up to this point unknown to the public. His father had been a recording engineer for Motown bands and had taught him intricate recording techniques when he was just a young boy. This knowledge Clutchy used to his advantage during his travels, working in recording studios from Bombay to Cairo. The information we gathered of him was from a small biographical manuscript that was found with his recordings under the care of a Mohave shaman who was a descendant of the Cahuilla Indian tribe who Clutchy had studied under. In this autobiography we find the writings of a musical gypsy who traveled the world investigating consciousness and its relation to music.

When Clutchy was just 20 years old he traveled to the Far East and was under the tutelage of Rinzai Zen monks in Japan for many years investigating silence and the rhythms of silence in music. Later, he studied Raja Yoga in India to master and articulate the movements of the body and its relation to sound. In his autobiography Clutchy relates his fascination with drums and their effect on consciousness so he decided to travel to Lagos, Nigeria to study with a master percussionist by the name Oba-lu-Funke. During his stay there he became a political revolutionary and gun-runner, and staged rebel missions to fight the oppressive government and its policies of Apartheid. During his intensive studies and travels, Clutchy was constantly recording music.

When he returned to the US Clutchy used his recording techniques to produce his own music and create instruments of his own. He has played with many groups primarily in the jazz, funk, avant setting. During his recording with other musicians Clutchy refused to contribute his name to the recordings, preferring to use a pseudonym or no name at all. He was purportedly good friends with Moondog and did some recordings with him; these recordings are yet to be found. His recordings span from the early 70s to the late 90s covering a whole spectrum of musical styles. After these recordings came to the surface, we have tried to contact the original source where these recordings were found unfortunately that source has since died. It is said by locals who knew him that Clutchy Hopkins returned to the Mojave Desert to finish his life out living in an underground cave; no one has heard from him since.

The MySpace Page also has a documentary that consists of several videos in which people named J.T., Percy Crimmons, Nijella Falhall, Teddy La Brea, and Jasinto talk about their run-ins with Clutchy Hopkins in Hawthorne and Hermosa Beach, CA and Guanajuato, Mexico.

Despite all the mystery the fact remains, this dude is indeed one of those rare musical geniuses. Enjoy.

Check out this track entitled Alexandra And Gabriel from Natural Self’s latest album The Art Of Vibration available now through Tru-Thoughts Recordings. Natural Self is the solo work of producer Keno-1. The album also features contributions from Andreya Triana, Abdominal, Nostalgia 77, Jonny Spall, Fulvio Sigurta and Capstone Little. The entire album definitely has a soulful, jazzy, vibe with obvious hip hop, trip hop, and electronica influences. This is not one to miss.

Hailing from Santa Ana, California, Free the Robots is bringing the heat. DJ and producer Chris Alfaro samples and manipulates sounds from an eclectic mix of genres to create instrumental bliss. Drawing from funk, electronica, jazz, world, rock, and psychedelic music, the Free the Robots EP serves hip hop with a definite twist.

Catch Free the Robots at the We The People Festival in Los Angeles on September 27, or chance an encounter at The Crosby in Santa Ana’s Arts District. Alfaro’s joint venture offers food, drinks, books, and of course, music.

Hailing from Oxnard, CA Oh No creates compositions with multi-dimensional landscapes that would give anyone a mind blowing experience. One that would severely alter your state of consciousness and cause you to enter a higher state of being where everything doesn’t make sense but makes sense simultaneously. What the hell am I talking about you ask? Hell if I know, but that is the first thing that comes to mind every time I play his album Dr. No’s Oxperiment. With a total of 28 tracks this Oxnard resident delivers to you more than you can ever ask for. He comes from a family with heavy musical influence. He’s the younger brother of legendary producer Madlib, and son of jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis. No wonder this guy’s got crazy musical talent. I want to share a track with you called Heavy. Its my favorite track off the album.
