Simple Pleasures The Experience

Simple Pleasures

img 3979 300x168 Simple Pleasures The Experience

Curators Jessilisa Morretti and Matthewdavid hosted Simple Pleasures at Subliminal Projects last night and I was completely taken by surprise. I heard a few bits and pieces about what was going to be presented but it didn’t really hit me until I got there.

img 3983 300x168 Simple Pleasures The Experience

As I entered I was greeted by unexplainable sounds that operated through different dimensions, frequencies, and unspecified instances of existence that reverberated through the walls and through the bodies of hypnotized listeners that were creating collages, lying on the ground, or just staring blankly into space.

img 3985 300x168 Simple Pleasures The Experience

I wish I had a real explanation for what was taking place but check out this video and maybe you can kind of understand what I’m talking about. Sound vibrations are created from touching the metallic tree sculpture and the sounds are running through tape- that big machine with tubes on the right. It delivered rich, warm, and powerful tones that for some unexplainable reason I enjoyed every bit as much as I would listening to a well composed/played piece of music. The frequencies were definitely affecting everyone’s brainwave patterns…I began to feel like mine were as time progressed. (If someone can comment- elaborate more on this it would be much appreciated)

I then decided to check out the tape cassette players hanging up on the walls. Each player contained a looping cassette tape playing different recordings of layered atmospheric sounds. That’s when it finally hit me on how amazing this all was. I think it was my first time experiencing sound being the entire focal point of an art exhibit. Listening to each tape was like looking at a painting. You couldn’t help but try to pick out the different textures, colors, and emotions within each recording.

img 3980 300x168 Simple Pleasures The Experience

I wish I would’ve stayed longer. Fortunately I was able to catch a little bit of Ras G before I left.

You’ll definitely be seeing me at the next one….hopefully I’ll remember to bring a pillow to sit on next time around.

Nosaj Thing “Coat Of Arms”

nosaj.jpg

Today Is THE Day

The highly anticipated Nosaj Thing album entitled Drift Nosaj Thing Coat Of Arms is now available through all major MP3 retailers (I-Tunes, Amazon.com, etc.). Hailing from Los Angeles, CA Jason Chung aka Nosaj Thing has been holding it down as one of the sickest producers in the scene. He’s shared the stage with artists such as Prefuse 73, Daedalus, and Flying Lotus and his productions consist of experimental electronic style music meshed with gritty hip hop-ish beats that tends to make minds melt into a gooey unidentifiable pile of existence. His new album is definitely something you can’t pass up. Instant classic right here. Check out this track called Coat of Arms Nosaj Thing Coat Of Arms.

Mix Master Mike Blastin Your Ear Drums @ Low End Theory This Wed!

IMO The Dopest DJ Of All Time

On Wednesday, May 20th we are back (hint) with another historic meeting of the minds at Low End Theory. It’s a double-headliner situation, featuring Mix Master Mike and Jneiro Jarel. No hype required — this night will go down in Low End history. Precision subharmonics by L.A.’s finest Pure Filth. Gaslamp Killer is finally back from Europe, who will join Daddy Kev and Nobody on resident duty (Nocando returns next week). We are expecting a large turnout, so early arrival is highly recommended for easy entry:

Jneiro Jarel (a.k.a. Dr. Who Dat?) has amassed a global following based on his stunning Beat Journey and Beyond 2morrow albums on the legendary Lex Records label. Imagine a parallel universe with drums, trumpets and various vocals, all cut to perfection using re-engineered Dalek lasers, pro-scratch mixers and brightly coloured computers that run on sugar cane.

Los Angeles Radio Statio 103.1 Goes Off Air

1031.jpg

This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option — to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative – simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 – which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world.

Happy New Years!

Looking For Something To Do? Check This Out Or You’ll Be Missing Out!

On Wednesday, December 31st Low End Theory is proud to present the New Years Eve of a lifetime. As it turned out, NYE is on a Wednesday this year. So we decided to ring in 2009 proper for the good people of Los Angeles by assembling a line-up of breathtaking proportions, featuring: Dose One and Jel as Themselves; Free Moral Agents featuring Ikey Owens of the Mars Volta; Low End’s very own Blank Blue; SAMIYAM vs. Ras G audio death match; and MFin’ Thavius Beck. All residents are locked and loaded. Sound reinforcement by L.A.’s finest Pure Filth Soundsystem. We’re starting the music at 9PM for this special occasion, so feel free to start early with us. And because we love you, cover charge will not be raised. Enjoy:

themselves 160x160 Happy New Years!
THEMSELVES
[Anticon]
Dose One and Jel form Themselves, a pioneering group in the avant-rap movement. Themselves also served as a precursor to their most current band Subtle, which added other performers to the Dose and Jel nucleus. It was Halloween 2007 when Themselves reunited on the Low End Theory stage for the first time in two years. Since then they’ve been touring non-stop, and are preparing for a new Themselves mixtape and tour in 2009 (Coachella is already booked). This New Year’s Eve will mark their entry into 2009, as they ring in the New Year for the Low End faithful.

freemoralagents 160x160 Happy New Years!
FREE MORAL AGENTS
[Chocolate Industries]
Isaiah “Ikey” Owens is familiar to many as the keyboard maestro in The Mars Volta, as well as their reggae-tinted alter-ego, De Facto. In 2006, FMA reformed from Ikey’s solo-project to a six-member group and started improvising new material. With the lineup of Mendee Ichikawa (vocals), Reid Kinnet (rhodes), Jesse Carzello (guitar), Dennis Owens (bass), Ryan Reiff (drums) and Isaiah jumping from keyboard to keyboard, FMA is a sight to behold. They’ve been staples of the Low End sonic aesthetic since we started — now they return to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
http://www.myspace.com/freemoralagents

blankblue 160x90 Happy New Years!
BLANK BLUE
[Ubiquity]
Elvin “Nobody” Estela and Niki Randa are the founding members of Blank Blue, one of the most refreshing groups to emerge from Los Angeles in eons. Now flanked by Andres Renteria on drums and Brian Martinez on bass, they’ve been showcasing their unique blend of psychedelia and melodic beauty to listeners around the world. Prepare to be spellbound. People! Believe!

samiyam 160x90 Happy New Years!
SAMIYAM
[Brainfeeder]
As one-half of the FLYamSAM production duo (countered by Flying Lotus), Michigan-transplant SAMIYAM is an exciting addition to the L.A. beat producer community. He recently dropped an EP on the renowned UK-based dubstep label Hyperdub, while his Rap Beats Vol. 1 on Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint has been dropping jaws worldwide. A Low End crowd favorite, SAMIYAM has rocked it solo and at the Beat Invitational. He returns once again to shred your mind to bits.

rasg 160x90 Happy New Years!
RAS G
[Poo-Bah]
With a handful of records, some blunts and an MPC, this L.A. producer has been making beats for five years now and has released a handful of EPs on the Poo-Bah label. With dub heavy bass and dusty synth beats, Ras G is a Low End favorite and we can’t wait for him to bring the noise.
http://www.myspace.com/rasg

thavius 160x90 Happy New Years!
THAVIUS BECK
[Mush]
He started as a saxophonist/bassist with a sampler, who later morphed into the beatmaking behemoth that sits before your monitor. Ten years, two groups, and ten solo records later (as well as production for Saul Williams, Busdriver, Subtitle, various film scores and remixes), and Thavius Beck has become de rigeur listening for electronic music fans worldwide. Bring it on!
