MF Doom “Doomsday”

MFDoomDoomsday MF Doom Doomsday

MF Doom is one of my favorite emcees EVER.

“Doomsday” is off his debut album Operation: Doomsday MF Doom Doomsday released in 1999… which I think was the first track I heard by MF [Doom]. His lyrical imagery is so vivid. If I remember correctly, the first time I heard the song, I think I had an eargasm… luckily Cameron Diaz used it as hair gel (insert hee-hee-ho-hum here)

MF Doom’s persona was born in 1998. Since then, he only rocks the mic with a mask hiding his face. Inspired by his love of comic books, MF plays a villainous character in most of his joints. His body of work includes a few albums with his former group KMD, his collabo album with MF Grimm, and his aliases King Geedorah, Metal Fingers, and Viktor Vaughn. He’s best known for his collabos with producers Madlib (Madvillainy MF Doom Doomsday) and Dangermouse (The Mouse and the Mask MF Doom Doomsday). Make sure to keep an eye out for the MF Doom-Ghostface Killah album to drop soon.

You can hear MF Doom’s work featured throughout Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network. Watch a commercial he did for the network: Christmas with Doom

Heliocentrics “Distant Star (feat. Percee P & MF Doom)”

heliocentrics.jpg

Would you like a heavy serving of some raw Hip Hop?? Here it is, in all its glory. If you don’t know who Heliocentrics is then check this out. The group consists of legendary musicians such as Malcolm Catto (sampled by DJ Shadow and Madlib) Mike Burnham, and Fake Ferguson Check out this Turntable Lab exclusive featuring two of the most hardhitting emcees around- Percee P and MF Doom. They rhyme over the track Distant Star Heliocentrics Distant Star (feat. Percee P & MF Doom) found on the album entitled Out There Heliocentrics Distant Star (feat. Percee P & MF Doom). Seriously, pick up this single and the album and tell me- when was the last time you’ve heard anything like this? They don’t make it like they used to so you’ll definitely appreciate it if you have that itch to listen to some realness. The beats are just ridiculous.

Count Bass D “Art for Sale”

CountBassDArtForSale Count Bass D Art for Sale

“My record company is jerkin’ me… in a million ways that I can see…”

This song is a great representation of what artists are encountering with record labels today. Dwight Farrell aka Count Bass D aka Dwight Spitz, from Tennessee, isn’t your typical southern rapper. His influences of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, MF Doom, and J Dilla are prevalent in his lo fi grooves. Art for Sale Count Bass D Art for Sale is the title track from his album released in 2006. I always love it when I hear cats without a real singing voice sing to a track. … and conscious too?! What more can you ask for?

Check out Count’s latest album L7 which dropped a couple of days ago.

The Black Keys “Psychotic Girl”

blackkeys.jpg

Here’s a track from The Black Keys album Attack & Release The Black Keys Psychotic Girl called Psychotic Girl The Black Keys Psychotic Girl. The band teamed up with Danger Mouse (Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, Beck, MF Doom) on this album to deliver not only classic sounding Black Keys flavor but to add a little trip-hop influence into the mix. The Black Keys are well respected amongst their peers. Bands such as Radiohead, Metallica, and members of Led Zeppelin are well known fans. Psychotic girl is a step away from their usual work focusing more on melody, space, and psychadelics. Danger Mouse has done an exceptional job of keeping their influences in balance.
