On Wednesday, December 31st Low End Theory is proud to present the New Years Eve of a lifetime. As it turned out, NYE is on a Wednesday this year. So we decided to ring in 2009 proper for the good people of Los Angeles by assembling a line-up of breathtaking proportions, featuring: Dose One and Jel as Themselves; Free Moral Agents featuring Ikey Owens of the Mars Volta; Low End’s very own Blank Blue; SAMIYAM vs. Ras G audio death match; and MFin’ Thavius Beck. All residents are locked and loaded. Sound reinforcement by L.A.’s finest Pure Filth Soundsystem. We’re starting the music at 9PM for this special occasion, so feel free to start early with us. And because we love you, cover charge will not be raised. Enjoy:

THEMSELVES
[Anticon]
Dose One and Jel form Themselves, a pioneering group in the avant-rap movement. Themselves also served as a precursor to their most current band Subtle, which added other performers to the Dose and Jel nucleus. It was Halloween 2007 when Themselves reunited on the Low End Theory stage for the first time in two years. Since then they’ve been touring non-stop, and are preparing for a new Themselves mixtape and tour in 2009 (Coachella is already booked). This New Year’s Eve will mark their entry into 2009, as they ring in the New Year for the Low End faithful.

FREE MORAL AGENTS
[Chocolate Industries]
Isaiah “Ikey” Owens is familiar to many as the keyboard maestro in The Mars Volta, as well as their reggae-tinted alter-ego, De Facto. In 2006, FMA reformed from Ikey’s solo-project to a six-member group and started improvising new material. With the lineup of Mendee Ichikawa (vocals), Reid Kinnet (rhodes), Jesse Carzello (guitar), Dennis Owens (bass), Ryan Reiff (drums) and Isaiah jumping from keyboard to keyboard, FMA is a sight to behold. They’ve been staples of the Low End sonic aesthetic since we started — now they return to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

BLANK BLUE
[Ubiquity]
Elvin “Nobody” Estela and Niki Randa are the founding members of Blank Blue, one of the most refreshing groups to emerge from Los Angeles in eons. Now flanked by Andres Renteria on drums and Brian Martinez on bass, they’ve been showcasing their unique blend of psychedelia and melodic beauty to listeners around the world. Prepare to be spellbound. People! Believe!

SAMIYAM
[Brainfeeder]
As one-half of the FLYamSAM production duo (countered by Flying Lotus), Michigan-transplant SAMIYAM is an exciting addition to the L.A. beat producer community. He recently dropped an EP on the renowned UK-based dubstep label Hyperdub, while his Rap Beats Vol. 1 on Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint has been dropping jaws worldwide. A Low End crowd favorite, SAMIYAM has rocked it solo and at the Beat Invitational. He returns once again to shred your mind to bits.

RAS G
[Poo-Bah]
With a handful of records, some blunts and an MPC, this L.A. producer has been making beats for five years now and has released a handful of EPs on the Poo-Bah label. With dub heavy bass and dusty synth beats, Ras G is a Low End favorite and we can’t wait for him to bring the noise.

THAVIUS BECK
[Mush]
He started as a saxophonist/bassist with a sampler, who later morphed into the beatmaking behemoth that sits before your monitor. Ten years, two groups, and ten solo records later (as well as production for Saul Williams, Busdriver, Subtitle, various film scores and remixes), and Thavius Beck has become de rigeur listening for electronic music fans worldwide. Bring it on!

As a producer and engineer, he’s spent the last decade crafting classics for the likes of AWOL One, Busdriver, The Grouch, Sage Francis, Mix Master Mike, Abstract Rude, D-Styles, Freestyle Fellowship, The Shape Shifters and many more. His DJ sets are a high-tech affair with Kev primarily engaged in live remixes, slicing experimental beats and hip-hop classics to shreds.

D-STYLES
[Funkshitup]
His virtuoso skills on the turntables have been compared to that of Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane. As a former member of Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Beat Junkies, he toured the globe, helping transform turntablism into a global phenomenon. Now, the legendary D-Styles is back on the frontlines of underground culture, shredding your soul every week at Low End Theory.

THE GASLAMP KILLER
[Low End Theory]
Over the course of the last few years, Gaslamp Killer has established a solid rep for devastating beats and intricate cuts. This nomadic West Coaster has steadily smashed the scene from San Diego to Los Angeles to San Francisco, earning the respect of heavyweight players in the process. Bear witness to one of his epic sets and see what the buzz is all about.
